"High Impact Strategies for Induction Program Leaders:

Mentoring the Mentors"

1 DAY - Saturday, April 21, 2001, 8:30 AM to 4 PM - Presented by Barry Sweeny.

NO MATER WHAT LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE, if you have leadership responsibilities for a mentoring or induction program, you will LOVE the ideas and advice you gain from this workshop!

Receive Barry's new book "Leading the Teacher Mentoring & Induction Program", just published this October by Skylight Professional Development, a $25 value. Here's what Linda Darling-Hammond says about Barry's book - "For all those who are working to support beginning teachers and launch them into a successful career, this book offers sage advice. It should be read by anyone who cares about building a strong and capable profession of teachers."

The Challenge of Being an Induction Program Leader Today -

Sure, induction and mentoring program leaders must coordinate, train, run meetings, solve problems, monitor budgets, etc. HOWEVER, beyond those management tasks, what approaches to induction program LEADERSHIP must you know?

The challenges of standards, accountability, and school improvement now mean that induction and mentoring coordinators must be able to develop a "High Impact" program that delivers RESULTS in terms of better teaching and increased student learning. This workshop will help you learn the kinds of leadership that you need to provide which will ensure that your mentoring and induction program actually attains those desired results!

The PRESSING NEED for Mentoring of Mentors -

The definition of excellence in teaching has changed so dramatically that our typical approaches to mentoring are no longer adequate! Perhaps you have realized that not every great teacher makes a great mentor. Do you know why that is and what to do to develop High Impact Mentoring? Do you know how to ensure that mentors are powerful one-to-one staff developers of their proteges?

Your approach to mentoring must be different if it is to make a difference! Your program must provide mentoring that will lead novices to become highly effective teachers who promote high levels of student learning. Mentors also need to demonstrate that they are continually learning to be better, more effective teachers. BUT, most mentors have never had formal mentors themselves who could demonstrate the kind of teaching and mentoring we need in education today.

Mentors are looking to their program leaders for guidance and models of the new approach to mentoring that they need to provide. Can you provide it? This workshop will help you to become the model of "High Impact" mentoring that your program participants need to succeed!

Learn Barry's "Mentoring of Mentors" model and strategies that have been developed and proven over 13 years! Help your mentors to make sense of all the instructional improvement initiatives in your district. Help your mentors learn what powerful mentoring is like through their experience of working with and learning from YOU. Help your mentors learn how to implement the model they experience with you in their work with novice teachers.

Workshop Objectives - Participants will:

NOTE - WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND that persons planning to attend this Leaders Training should ALSO attend the Mentor Training of Trainers on April 20th! The strategies presented today will be dependent on the Mentor Training of Trainers workshop content.
