PLANNING COMPREHENSIVE
STAFF DEVELOPMENT
by Barry Sweeny
How comprehensive is your system staff development programs?
Does your staff development system adequately address the needs
of your staff and organization at all levels?
Evaluate your program by comparing the four purposes of staff development
with the three levels of service usually required within a school
district.
- Start by printing out this page.
- Then, write in the names of your staff development programs
in the appropriate cells. For example, a mentoring program would
be listed under "Individual" and would be in cells for
"Professional Development", "Instructional Improvement",
and probably "Curriculum Implementation", becuse those
are the areas in which the mentors help new teachers.
- Finally, consider any empty cells to see if they represent unmet
needs which should be addressed.
Note: Not every program needs to address all cells in a column.
But overall, the programs do need to address all cells adequately.
