Assessment of New Teachers ?

  • Evaluation and assessment usually mean the same thing, although they shouldn't. Evaluation is not typically the job of another teacher, as that will usually "kill" the beginning teacher's willingness to seek help from the mentor. Better to leave evaluation to the principal.
  • Assessment implies something subtly different from evaluation. Barry's advice is that, when it comes to mentoring, it's best to focus only on the mentor's prompting through questions of the protege's self-assessment. This develops the new teacher's reflective skills, prompts the protege to be prepared for self-assessment when working alone, AND it ensures that mentoring is a "safe" relationship where novices can ask anything and share their real problems.
  • If you really must gain a evaluation perspective that is different from the novice's supervisor, contact Educational Testing Services New Teacher Assessments for assessments or seek guidance from your state board of education.
